WHERE BETHEL, CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK:
Stay To Work In Bethel Itself: As the employed population has grown the percentage remaining in Bethel to work each day declined from 28% in 1970 to 22% in 1980. But this percentage stabilized at 21% in 1990 and 22% in 2000. Significant local job growth between 1980 and 1990 likely braked greater reduction in the percentage by providing job opportunities locally.

Outflow From Bethel To Nearby Municipalities: It is not surprising that with Bethel's close proximity to Danbury's large economic base, more 2000 work trips were made from Bethel to Danbury (2,557 or 26%) than from residences in Bethel to job sites in Bethel itself (2,118 or 22%) in 2000.

The next highest destinations for employed Bethel residents were points in New York State (823), Norwalk (490), Stamford (484), Ridgefield (476), Brookfield (385) and Wilton (295). These eight destinations account for 78% of Bethel resident's total 2000 work trips.

The 1980-2000 trend is for Bethelites to be increasingly less dependent upon Danbury (from 38% in 1980 down to 26%) for their employment in favor of other locations such as New York State, Stamford, Ridgefield and Brookfield and scattered other locations. As in most neighboring communities, the 1970-2000 trend is for employed Bethel residents to be less dependent upon jobs within the Housatonic Valley Region for their livelihood, with 76% working in the Region in 1970, falling to 71% in 1980, then to 67% in 1990 and 62% in 2000.
