WHERE NEWTOWN, CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK:
Stay To Work In Newtown Itself: The percentage of employed local residents remaining in Newtown for work each day fell from 39% in 1970 to 38% in 1980, 29% in 1990 and then 24% in 2000.

Outflow From Newtown To Nearby Municipalities: Newtown has the Region's third largest economy. Also having one of the largest geographic areas in the state, what is acceptable to the average person as a normal length for a trip to work stays within the Town lines of Newtown more than in other towns. Thus it is not surprising that more 2000 work trips were made by the Town's employed residents to job sites in Newtown itself (2,998 or 24%) than to any other single location.

The next most important destinations are Danbury as the regional hub (1,606 or 13%), points in New York State (966), the cities of Norwalk (463), Bridgeport (450) and Stamford (449), and then the towns of Bethel (361), Trumbull (324), and Brookfield (323). These eight destinations, in combination with Newtown itself, account for 65% of 2000 work trips by employed Newtown residents.

As for changes between 1990 and 2000, Newtown residents were less dependent upon their own community for job locations (29% down to 24%), less dependent upon Danbury and more dependent upon other more distant locations.

As in most neighboring communities the 1970-2000 trend is for employed Newtown residents to be less dependent upon jobs within the Housatonic Valley Region for their livelihood, with 63% working in the Region in 1970, 65% in 1980, falling to 58% in 1990 and then 49% in 2000 (5,965).
