Census data summarized by HVCEO. Work at home included in data. WHERE REDDING, CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK: Stay To Work In Redding Itself: As a residential area off of major transportation routes and without significant zoning for business uses, the percentage of employed residents remaining in Redding each day for their livelihood is low compared to neighboring towns such as Ridgefield and Newtown. The figures are 18% for 1970, 17% for 1980, 18% for 1990 and then 20% for 2000, bucking the regional trend of continuous municipal decline for this variable. Outflow From Redding To Nearby Municipalities: Redding was the single largest destination for 2000 work trips made by Redding residents (816 or 20%). The next highest total is to New York State (576, of which 256 were to Westchester County and 237 were to Manhattan)), Stamford (389), north to adjacent Danbury as the regional center (345), followed by Norwalk (270), Wilton (224), Westport (212), and Ridgefield (180). These eight locations alone account for 74% of Redding's 2000 work trips. As for changes in the percentage distribution of work trips between 1990 and 2000, Town residents became less dependent upon Danbury and more dependent upon Westchester County and other locations. Of Redding residents, 43% worked in the Region in 1970, 42% in 1980, 44% in 1990 and down to 38% in 2000 (1,555). |
