WHERE RIDGEFIELD, CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK:
Stay To Work In Ridgefield Itself: The percentage of employed residents that remain in Ridgefield each day for work has remained relatively stable in recent decades, 40% in 1970 falling to 32% in 1980, down to 30% in 1990 and stable at 30% for 2000.

Outflow From Ridgefield To Nearby Municipalities: In 2000 more work trips by Ridgefield residents were made to in-Town work sites (3,151 or 30%) than to any other single location. The next highest total was to points in nearby New York State (2,343 or 22%, of which 573 were to Manhattan and 1,445 were to adjacent Westchester County), followed by trips to Stamford to the south (1,246) and then adjacent Danbury to the north as the regional hub (752). Other important work site destinations, all to the south, include Norwalk (522), Wilton (442), Greenwich (418), Westport (228) and Fairfield (165). These locations combined were the destination for 87% of Ridgefielders' 2000 work trips.

As for change in the work trip distribution pattern between 1990 and 2000, Ridgefield was less dependent upon Danbury for jobs. As in most neighboring communities, the 1970-2000 trend is for employed Ridgefield residents to be less dependent upon jobs within the Housatonic Valley Region for their livelihood, with 48% working in the Region in 1970, 43% in 1980, up to 46% for 1990 and then down to 39% in 2000 (10,699).
