From Within Ridgefield Itself: As in most other municipalities in the Region, the extent to which employers in Ridgefield rely upon the working residents of Ridgefield to serve as their labor pool has been steadily falling between 1970 and 2000. The statistical chances of a Ridgefield resident filling any particular job opening in Ridgefield were 59% in 1970, 52% in 1980, 47% in 1990 and a big drop to 28% in 2000.

Workers Into Ridgefield From Nearby Municipalities:
In 2000 the major geographic sources of labor to fill jobs in Ridgefield were as follows: from Ridgefield itself (3,151 or 28%), from Danbury to the north (2,182 or 20%), adjacent New York State (994), Bethel (476), New Milford (472), Brookfield (370), Stamford (321), Newtown (314), Norwalk (282), New Fairfield (231) and Southbury (201). Workers from just these eleven locations filled 81% of all of the jobs in Ridgefield in 2000.

Between 1990 and 2000 the local Ridgefield economy became significantly less dependent upon Ridgefield residents to fill jobs. At the same time the local economy became more dependent upon labor supply from Danbury, New York State and other locations.
