WHERE SHERMAN, CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK:
Stay To Work In Sherman Itself: Sherman is the remotest Town in the Region,
far from transportation routes and with minimal job inducing zoning. It is thus
not surprising that the percentage of employed residents that remain in Sherman
each day is very low. The figure was just under 17% for 1970, just above 17%
for 1980, and back down to 16% for 1990 and 20% for 2000.
Outflow From Sherman To Nearby Municipalities: The largest single destination
for employed residents in 2000 was out of the Region to New York State (516
or 27%, of which 154 were to Manhattan and 185 were to Westchester County).
Sherman itself was next highest (372 or 20%), followed by Danbury (267), New
Milford (165), New Fairfield (88) and Brookfield (82). These destinations alone
account for 79% of total 2000 work trips made by employed Sherman residents.
As for changes in the distribution of work trips between 1990 and 2000, the
orientation of employed residents to New York State for jobs decreased slightly
from 31% to 27%. Danbury and New Milford also fell, while Sherman's percentage
rose. Sherman
residents are remaining dependent upon jobs within the Housatonic Valley Region
for their livelihood, with 59% working in the Region in 1970, then 63% in 1980,
falling to 57% in 1990 and then 56% (1,066) for 2000.
