WHERE BROOKFIELD, CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK:
Stay To Work In Brookfield Itself: Bucking a strong regional trend, the percentage of employed residents remaining in Town to work increased rather than declined during the 1980-1990 period, but then decreased like others from 1990 to 2000. The 1970 figure of 24% fell to 21% in 1980 but then bounced back to 25% in 1990, then down to 23 for 2000.

Outflow from Brookfield To Nearby Municipalities: It is not surprising that with Brookfield's close proximity to Danbury's much larger economic base, Danbury was the largest single destination for Brookfield's 2000 work trips (2,060 or 25%), followed by trips originating and ending in Brookfield itself (1,876 or 23%).

The most important other job sites for employed Brookfield residents are New York State (1,224, of which 749 were to Westchester County and 158 were to Manhattan), Ridgefield (370), Bethel (317), New Milford (258), Newtown (187) and Stamford (183). These eight destinations account for 80% of Brookfield's 2000 work trips.

The 1980-2000 trend is for employed Brookfield residents to be much less dependent upon Danbury for jobs (40% in 1980, 30% in 1990 and 25% in 2000). As in most neighboring communities, the 1970-2000 trend is for employed Brookfield residents to also be less dependent upon jobs within the Housatonic Valley Region for their livelihood, with 80% working in the Region in 1970, falling to 75% in 1980, 69% in 1990 and 64% (5,203) in 2000.
