WHERE DANBURY CT'S EMPLOYED RESIDENTS GO TO WORK:
Stay To Work In Danbury Itself: The percentage of employed Danbury residents that remain in Danbury each day for their employment has declined steadily during the 1970-2000 period. The figure was 73% in 1970, 64% in 1980, 56% in 1990 and 47% in 2000.

Still, the Danbury figure for each decade is also the highest percentage in the Region of employed residents remaining in their home community for work. This is due to the fact that Danbury has the largest economy in the area and is the regional hub, combined with the fact that it has by far the greatest variety of housing for employees.

Outflow from Danbury To Nearby Municipalities: As it is the dominant local economy in the Region and has a large and varied housing stock, it is not surprising that more 2000 work trips were made by employed Danbury residents to the City itself than to any other single municipality.

The number of employed residents remaining in the City for work each day (18,560 or 47%) dwarfs the next highest destination, which is New York State (4,535 or 12%, of which 2,532 trips were to Westchester County and 739 to adjacent Putnam County).

Other important employment locations for Danbury residents include Ridgefield (2,182), Bethel (1,897), Brookfield (1,681), Stamford (1,274), Norwalk (873), Newtown (861), Greenwich (776) and New Milford (771). Danbury and the nine destinations above absorb 85% of the total 2000 work trips made.

The 1980-2000 trend is for City residents to be less dependent upon jobs in Danbury for their employment in favor of more distant locations. As in most neighboring communities the 1970-2000 trend is for employed Danbury residents to be less dependent upon jobs within the Housatonic Valley Region for their livelihood, with 86% working in the Region in 1970, falling to 79% in 1980, 73% in 1990 and then 68% (26,691) in 2000.
