ROUTE 58 IN BETHEL OVERVIEW
This state route originates along the coast at Route 1 in Fairfield, CT, then proceeds north thru the semi-rural center of Fairfield County.

Conn DOT’s 2005 estimated average daily traffic volumes indicate only minor changes in volume as Route 58 proceeds northward thru Bethel, with 6,000 at the Redding Town Line, 7,100 between Sunset Hill Road and Hoyts Hill Road, and then 4,900 on the final segment north from Hoyts Hill Road to Route 302.

All of Route 58 in Bethel, also known as Redding Road, is designated by Conn DOT as a minor arterial roadway. The total mileage of Route 58 in the Town is 2.5 miles, and the entire roadway frontage is zoned for residential use.

Route 58 enters Bethel from Redding where it is within the Saugatuck River Watershed, a public water supply draining south for consumption in coastal areas. A landmark on the right is an entrance to the Putnam Memorial State Park.

Soon the northbound roadway reaches a high point in Bethel of about 640 feet, and here northbound Route 58 enters the northward draining Wolf Pit Brook Watershed, a potential, presently untapped public water supply area.

Route 58 will continue downslope thru this potential water supply drainage area which then ends in the vicinity of the intersection with Hoyts Hill Road.

Just to the north of Route 58's intersection with Starr Lane and Sunset Hill Road is a problematic "S" curve. Late in 2003 the Bethel Police Commission brought this to the attention of Conn DOT.

Noting that as drivers approach these curves they are proceeding from a wider road to a narrower one, recommendations to the state were to post larger "S" curve signs and to remove the 40 MPH speed sign on the curve. Other options are better illumination and skid resistant paving.

Route 58 then terminates at a signalized intersection with Route 302 near the geographic center of Bethel. It is worthy of note that proceeding north on Route 58, turning east along Route 302, and then north again on Old Hawleyville Road is a CT DOT designated Cross State Bicycle Route.
