TRAFFIC PLANNING FOR
CENTRAL NEW MILFORD, CT

PART 5: PATRIOTS WAY BYPASS

1. INTRO 2. DOWNTOWN 3. GROVE STREET 4. BOARDMAN ROAD 5. PATRIOTS WAY
6. EAST - WEST CONNECTOR
7. HOUSATONIC BRIDGES 8. TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT

According to a 1984 HVCEO study “Youngs Field Road could be moved to the east closer to the railroad tracks to line it up opposite either Nicholas Square or further to align across from West Street." This new intersection would be signalized. A view of the concept from the 1984 report is shown below:

In 2004 the New Milford Economic Development Commission sponsored a traffic consultant to prepare an analysis of a proposed bypass of Youngs Field Road, by intersecting with Bridge Street at West Street and proceeding thru the municipal parking lot to Patriots Way, which then has access to Youngs Field Road.

According to that study "The Town of New Milford is investigating the possibility of providing a connection from Youngs Field Road just south of the Public Works Department materials yard to Route 202 (Bridge Street) and eliminating the existing Route 202/Youngs Field Road intersection.

This roadway connection, also known as Patriots Way Bypass Road, will connect Bridge Street opposite West Street and will form the fourth leg to the signalized intersection. The proposed connection is also anticipated to improve corridor operations along Bridge Street since it eliminates the Route 202/Youngs Field Road intersection.

Continuing "The traffic signal at Route 202/ West Street/ Patriots Way Bypass intersection can be integrated into the Traffic Signal Coordination Plan for Downtown New Milford. This new intersection also improves the existing operation of the railroad traffic signal between West Street and Railroad Street/ Middle Street."

The study concluded that there would be localized traffic improvement with the combination of the East- West Connector Road and the Patriots Way Bypass in place, these details as qualified in section of 3.2.7 of the 2004 EDC report.

This traffic planning overview proceeds with part 6, an overview of issues surrounding the long proposed East - West Connector.
