REPORT ON DEEP BROOK AQUIFER

Another small, rural brook valley in Newtown, the Deep Brook site of 0.8 square mile is located along Route 302 between Sugar Lane and Head of Meadow Road. The southern half is considered of coarse-grained structure, the northern half fine-grained, and the entire aquifer is relatively shallow.

Virtually the entire direct recharge area is wetland. Land uses consist of agricultural land and widely spaced rural residences, plus several scattered low-density subdivisions. Substantial protection is provided by wetland regulations and zoning (residential zones requiring minimum lot sizes of 1, 2 and 3 acres).

Control measures should focus on farmland and wetland preservation, and stringent standards for on-site sewage disposal.
