REPORT ON GREAT PLAIN AQUIFER
A small aquifer in the broad valley of Beaver
Brook in northeast Danbury, this site extends north from Interstate
84 to the vicinities of Danbury Town Park on the west and
St. Gregory’s School on the east. Its areal extent is
about 0.8 square miles.
Although quite fully developed, the area is almost entirely
residential and sewered (RA-20 Zone, lot sizes averaging ½
acre per family). Small areas of wetland, some vacant land
and 2 schools complete the land use picture.

The single
major land use problem at this aquifer lies at its southern
edge, near Interstate 84: a major State of Connecticut road
salt stockpile which supplies the state road network for the
Region. Controls should be established to prevent spillage,
leachate and other damages to groundwater, or the storage
location removed to a less sensitive site.
Although small in size, this are is composed of coarse-grained
material over fine grained, with a hydraulic connection to
Lake Candlewood, which infers a major recharge potential.
