HISTORIC BASE LINE DATA: 1980 HVCEO
REPORT ON NEWTOWN AT HOUSATONIC AQUIFER

A low terrace and level riverfront plateau, this aquifer of 0.8 square mile area lies along the west shore of the Housatonic just upstream from its confluence with the Pootatuck. although composed of fine-grained sedimentary material, this aquifer has an estimated depth of 100 feet and a major recharge source from the adjacent Housatonic and Pootatuck Rivers.

The northerly one-third of the area is a waterfront residential community. Shady Rest, zoned half-acre residential; the balance of the area, almost entirely upon river meadows in agricultural use, is zoned residential one-acre. Apart from possible or occasional septic problems at Shady Rest, the only identified land use problem is a permitted industrial effluent discharge to the Pootatuck in adjacent Sandy Hook (Fabric Fire Hose Co., which, however, has recently ceased operations).

A natural gas intercity pipeline crosses the middle of the area, and the area is the proposed site of the Newtown sewage treatment plant.

Principal aquifer protection measures should focus on design of any sewage treatment plant to eliminate risk of groundwater contamination, on strict standards for septic systems, on prohibition of new or resumed industrial discharges in the adjacent area, and on preservation of existing wetlands and flood plains. The water supply potential here could be an important supplement to the Upper Pootatuck Aquifer.

COMMENT FROM 2002
UNITED WATER COMPANY PLAN

According to the United Water Company's 12/2002 Water Supply Plan "In the previous plan, United Water mentioned considering Turkey Hill Road/Toddy Hill Road {north of the current well field} as a site for a proposed future source of water supply. This area, however, is known to be contaminated with volatile organic chemicals.

United Water is presently looking in the Sandy Hook area {the Newtown at Housatonic Aquifer} for distant future use unless the need arises sooner. Another option is an interconnection with the Aquarion Water Company at the Monroe Town Line that would be used for emergency supply."
