HISTORIC BASE LINE DATA: 1980 HVCEO
REPORT ON UMPAWAUG POND AQUIFER

Small and shallow (0.6 square miles; 20 feet estimated thickness), this coarse-grained aquifer in western Redding (north of Topstone Road, east of Sympaug Turnpike) is presently well protected by zoning (2-acre residential), wetlands controls and several parcels of reserved open space.

Existing land use consists of a natural pond (Umpawaug Pond), extensive wetlands, and scattered low density residences. The future route 7 expressway is destined to skirt the western edge of this aquifer.

Strong enforcement of on-site sewage disposal standards, and measures to protect from road salt intrusion associated with the Route 7 expressway, are the principal protective measures needed at this location to assure the availability of a potentially useful local water source.
