REPORT ON UPPER ASPETUCK AQUIFER
Just upstream from the Aspetuck Valley Aquifer, near the headwaters
of the Aspetuck in southwestern Newtown, this long, narrow
aquifer of 0.8 mile extends about 2 miles along the stream
with its associated wetlands. Land use is rural: a large dairy
farm, scattered rural residences and open meadow and woodland.
While the natural recharge area is small, the aquifer is thought
to be coarse-grained and probably influences the Aspetuck
Valley Aquifer. Watershed holdings (Bridgeport Hydraulic Co.),
State Park, low density (3 acres residential) zoning, and
wetland regulations provide good protection. Future protection
efforts should focus on preservation of open space and strict
standards for on-site sewage disposal.
